Frances Mayes said, "What is this thrall for houses? I come from a long line of women who open their handbags and take out swatches of upholstery material, colored squares of bathroom tile, seven shades of yellow paint samples, and strips of flowered wallpaper. We love the concept of four walls. 'What is her house like?' my sister asks, and we both know she means what is she like."
I have the same thrall for houses. Ours has been being remodelled for the past nine years with no end in sight. It's been this way whereever we live. My husband is MacGyver, the man who can take whatever vision I present and bring it together for me on the type of budget that would make those "budget" designers on HGTV lay an egg. We repurpose everything and have adopted the use-what-you-have attitude whenever possible. And we do it because we love working together and because we, too, believe that our home reflects who we are.
I never think about re-sell value because, frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. I'm not going to build a spa bathroom just because they're selling these days. If I want to put a sunken tub in the middle of my living room, then I will (I'm not that flavor of exhibitionist, but I'm just saying that I could.) I can't live in someone else's house, I can only live in mine.
So don't apologize when you leave the store with a painting that "just jumped into your cart." It's the universe gathering the items you need to feel like yourself in the place where you can really be yourself. Best of all, your home becomes a reflection of who you are and it's beautiful.
