Saying Goodbye to Summer

Labor Day weekend is upon us, leaving us time for one last sunburn, one last barbeque, one last perfect summer day. This weekend is the hail Mary pass of summer—if we can just hang on for a second more then we won’t have to face the reality that summer has been spent. Oh, the temperature hasn’t changed all that much—as a matter of a fact I live where we will be sweating well into October but it’s not the same. You can’t drop everything and go visit Mickey Mouse, you can’t spend lazy days by the pool and you can’t leave a day early for the weekend because your kid has a test at school today!

Summer is my favorite time of year. I used to like Christmas best, but that was when I was given presents as opposed to now when the season just drains my wallet and leaves me bewildered as to how I managed to get through it in one piece. So I’m especially sad to see the hot sun sink from the sky and the leaves blow across the porch.

I hope you had a beautiful summer with your family and I hope that you’ve planned one last fun escape—even if it’s sinking into a theater seat with a bowl of popcorn to take in one last action flick. Summer is magic, and this weekend we can give summer a standing ovation by enjoying its last shining rays. I’ll send you my sunscreen when I’m done.
